Homeownership comes with numerous financial benefits, as well as financial risks. Your Real Estate Agent probably walked you through closing costs, broker fees, getting preapproved, building equity over time, but have you stopped to think about the nonfinancial benefits to homeownership? We think these are just as important, and can help guide you through the buying process, whether it’s your first, second or tenth home!

First on our list of perks is the control you have when you own your home. You can personalize as much as you’d like: put nails in the walls and paint your space any color. You also often have outdoor space you can customize - add a flower or vegetable garden, fence in your yard for your dog or put up a swing-set for your kids.

Second is the connection to your community you feel when you own your home. Homeownership fosters a stronger connection to your neighbors, you’re more likely to get involved with local events and community initiatives. In fact, you may even find yourself joining your neighborhood association (or at least the neighborhood Facebook group).

The third benefit is obvious, and that’s privacy. You aren’t sharing a building with other renters and you won’t have landlords or property managers to contend with. You can stomp as loud as you’d like or play music into the wee hours (ok, this might not be advisable if you like your new neighbors!).

Fourth is our favorite and that’s pets! Many rental properties either charge extra or simply don’t allow pets at all. Perhaps you’ve been dreaming of having a dog or cat, but you haven’t had the space or permission. In this case, homeownership is absolutely for you! You’ll likely have more space for a pet and no one will have rules about how big or what breed of dog you have. Plus, outdoor space is often more accessible.

Finally, a sense of independence and accomplishment comes with homeownership, especially when you buy your first home. You know you’re reaping the financial benefits like building equity and increasing generational wealth, but you can also be proud you are in a position to own a home. You’ve likely worked hard for this moment and you should enjoy the independence that comes with homeownership!

Owning your home provides a sense of security, connection, and personal fulfillment that often goes beyond financial considerations. If you’re ready to get started, reach out to us today!
