Neighborhood Series: Midway, Saint Paul

Posted by VIBE Realty on Friday, June 18th, 2021 at 12:00pm.

Midway, known officially as Hamline-Midway, is nestled about midway (you probably could have guessed it) between downtown Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul. Perhaps best known for Hamline University being located within its borders, the Green Line located on the south side of the neighborhood makes access between Minneapolis and Saint Paul easier than ever. At University Avenue and Snelling Avenue, you’ll find one of the busiest intersections in all of the Twin Cities. This area is one of the most significant cultural centers of the Twin Cities and it’s hard to find a neighborhood with more global restaurants and grocers. Also home to Saint Paul’s warehouse district, you’ll find a diverse mix of residential and commercial properties. Check out some recommended spots below.

Black Stack Brewing

Fresh beer and good times. That’s what you’ll get here! This family-run craft taproom pours stouts, lagers and IPAs. Enjoy a giant selection of board games to keep you busy while you sip, and grab some grub from food trucks out-front. You’re looking at a satisfying evening in Midway.

Can Can Wonderland

Say hello to your weekend plans. This spot is an absolute wonder (for most). Can Can Wonderland is an immersive amusement center with indoor mini golf, vintage arcade games, and a bar and eatery. Yes, all in one! Bonus, it’s attached to Black Stack Brewing. So while you’re waiting  your cue for some mini golf, you can hit up the brewery upstairs. You’re welcome for the tip.

Welcome to the modern day where we get utterly excited about co-working spaces in the cities. This energizing office space has a great setting if you’re looking for shared offices and learning centers. Did we mention their fitness integration? Chocolat Celeste

Tucked away in a secret part of Hamline-Midway, Chocolat Celeste is one of those places that you don't know about unless you know about it. They have led the craft chocolate movement in Minneapolis for more than 15 years, and are known to import European chocolate sourced from cacao growers from around the world. Their chocolates are as delicious as they are beautiful.

At Burning Brothers, their motto is "the only way to brew great gluten-free beer is to make it in a dedicated gluten-free facility."’ Major kudos to their dedication. So, if you’re on the hunt for gluten-free beer, this brewery is for you. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and tons of options on their taplist, all free of gluten.

Flying Pig Thrift

This nonprofit cooperative thrift and gift shop in Midway boasts a wide selection of treasures: furniture, clothes, and more. They have the fun ‘color of the month’ sales where everything is half off, so make sure to time your stop accordingly!

"Thrifting is one of my favorite things to do and this place is awesome! Find a treasure (or two) and leave knowing that your purchase helps support justice equity and gun violence prevention - after expenses, Flying Pig Thrift donates proceeds to nonprofits supporting these causes." Newell Park

One of the oldest parks in the Twin Cities, this spot is right on the edge of Midway, four blocks west of Snelling Avenue on Pierce Butler Route. With its rolling hills and old oak trees, this 10-acre plot is a great place to have a summer picnic, or to sit under a tree and read a book.

Ax-Max Surplus

There’s really no better way to describe this place than to use their very own words, so, without further ado...“We've bought and sold scientific, industrial, electronic, and mechanical surplus in the Twin Cities area for 50 years. We also specialize in arts & crafts supplies, tape, failed consumer products, and the bizarre, weird & wonderful. We have a loyal following of local artists, tinkerers, engineers, makers, and freaks and geeks of all styles.”

“This is the best place in the Twin Cities to find those things you never knew you needed. Added bonus is you will giggle your way through the store - the notes created by the staff are outrageously clever!” - Paige Kahle of VIBE Realty
